I oversee the implementation of the MaRCCI’s Strategy to accomplish her mission as a contribution to the broader University goals and objectives.
I have 15 years of experience in academia - all of which have been at Makerere University. At Makerere University, I have taught various undergraduate and graduate courses; supervised over 50 graduate students to date. I have co-authored of over eighty research articles (majority of which are in major international peer-reviewed journals). I have also been Principal Investigator on numerous research and training grants totaling USD 11 million to-date. I have led the development of Makerere University's award-winning Regional MSc program in plant breeding and seed systems that has been popular with various funding agencies. This program has trained over 150 mid-career scientists across African continent & has since developed into a model for regional capacity building in East Africa. This program has now upgraded into an African Centers of Excellence (ACE II project; one of 46 Centers created in selected Universities in Africa) with funding from the Government of Uganda through the World Bank. I have been recognized for my role as a mentor in the African Women in Agricultural Research and Development (AWARD) program; a program that has supported young women’s early career development in agricultural sciences. PhD Plant Breeding and Cytogenetics, with minor in Statistics, Iowa State University, 1981
Throughout my adult life and professional career, my passion has been to use plant breeding to relieve hunger and suffering in needy places. Over the last 40 years this desire has led me (and my wife, Pauline) to live and work in India, Costa Rica, Zambia, Ukraine and now Uganda, where we have spent the last 12 years. My work has involved research, university teaching, and graduate student training in applied plant breeding, focusing especially on applied quantitative genetics, experimental design and data analysis. The students who have received such training through Makerere University’s regional graduate program for plant breeding since 2008 represent more than 20 countries of Sub-Saharan Africa, and their research projects have addressed over 20 food crops that are important to their own nation. Whose main role is to support research, training, supervise student projects and contribute to management of the Centre.
Empowerment is at the centre of vision pursuit, personal, local, national and indeed development in all its forms. As such therefore, my passion is in the empowerment of farmers and stakeholders in the value chain towards the achievement of food and nutrition security. I achieve this through contribution to training of plant breeders whose work is to influence the potential of planting materials used by farmers. I derive satisfaction out of enlightening the path of the researcher in the quest for new knowledge and clearly, investment in training of the youth has long and lasting effects. My career therefore, my life has revolved around training, beginning with my first formal employment as lecturer in agronomy. This was at a college of agriculture in Zimbabwe, that trains versatile cadres to work in various capacities from agricultural research, commercial production, private sector agribusiness through to engagement with farmers on the field. I believe that engagement should target processes focused on success in a holistic manner. As charity begins at home, so shall it transcend and pervade all processes in pursuit of peace and prosperity for humankind. Above all, the well-nurtured family is the bedrock of food and nutrition security and peace of all nations. Read more...
